Welcome to Life on Planet Baby!
Our experience with children pre-Planet Baby
Before Mr PB and I had the pixies, we really had no idea about bringing up children. Sure, as the eldest of three children, I’d spent time helping my parents look after my siblings but only in the most cursory of senses. Mr PB and his twin sister arrived after four other siblings so he didn’t help with looking after younger ones at all.
Before the pixies arrived, our dear friends in Sydney had 3 children under 4 so we had helped them a bit. By cooking them meals when they had newborns or taking them wine after a hard day. But we hadn’t really done anything *hard*. You know, the real stuff you need to do with children. We hadn’t even babysat them. Not even for an hour. The only nappy I put on their daughter fell off a minute later as I had torn off the adhesive tags. Hmm, we were *greenhorns*.
Our arrival on Planet Baby
Our arrival on Planet Baby
So when Joshua arrived in November 2005, we really felt like we had been transported to another planet. Not just to another country where things were vaguely familiar enough to allow you to get by. No, another planet. Planet Baby. After having 3 children in 3½ years, we're still there and will be for quite a while yet!
This blog is about daily life on Planet Baby with our three little children and what inspires and keeps me sane.
Important facts about Planet Baby
So, you’ve turned up to visit us on Planet Baby (so lovely to see you), probably without a map or much idea of what life on this madcap planet is like.
To help you get your bearings, here are some of the important facts about Planet Baby (PB).
Population: Five - Jane (me), Mr PB and the pixies, Joshua (6½), India (4½) and Sam (3). Regular visitors are known as Planetarians.
Capital: Hobart, Tasmania, Australia (42.53° S latitude and 147.19° E longitude)
Official language: English, although a local dialect, Planetarian, is commonly used.
Formation: November 2005
Constitution: ‘The Family Rules’.
Currency: $AUD although bartering also occurs. The pixies collect gold coins (on the floor – “Finders keepers, losers weepers”) which are traded for dinosaurs and fairies.
Dress: Various forms, all discussed here
Time zone: Officially AEST (UTC+10) but the pixies rise at an unseemly hour (an hour earlier than their parents’ body clocks – we never seem to be synchronised) and never go to sleep until well after their 7.30 pm bedtime. Despite our valiant efforts. Read here and here to see their bedrooms.
Cuisine: A *limited* diet is consumed by the pixies, notwithstanding our best efforts. Miraculously, they seem to be able to exist on only just more than air.
Temperature: This rises and falls dependent on the time taken to complete dinner and how long it takes them to go to sleep.
